First time smoking weeds?

Last Saturday I smoked my first joint with a friend and other two folks. Before that I had had three drinks so I was a bit high. The fact is, the cannabis didn't seem to have any effect on me. Because it was my first time they left me smoke more than them, but I didn't notice anything at all. The guy who sold me said that it was normal because it was the first time and that I should give it another goal(but I surely won't do it soon), I think that perhaps it didn't work because I was drunk. Or maybe they just stole my money?
